A Personal Mission Born from Experience
In 2018, I witnessed something no one should ever have to see. During a quiet family dinner, my father-in-law Richard, a healthy and active 72-year-old, began choking on a piece of steak. The panic that followed still haunts me.
As a retired nurse, I thought I'd know exactly what to do. But in that moment, with Richard turning blue and my grandchildren watching in terror, performing the Heimlich maneuver correctly was harder than I ever imagined. We were lucky - Richard recovered after a frightening minute that felt like an eternity.
From Kitchen Table to Medical Device
That night, I couldn't sleep. I kept thinking about the families who weren't as fortunate as ours. After researching the statistics, I was shocked to learn that an adult dies from choking approximately every two hours in America, with adults over 65 facing a significantly higher risk.
Working with Dr. Robert Keller, an emergency physician and old colleague, we spent 18 months developing and testing what would become VitalVac. Our goal was simple: create a device that anyone could use correctly, even under extreme stress.
